I just tagged myself and it felt pretty good

There's a music meme going around that I haven't been tagged with yet, but I'm doing it anyway, just because I feel like it.
It starts by going HERE and clicking on the button (near the top of the screen) that says "Pop Music". Then you scroll through the list of years until you find the year you turned 18. Click on that year, and you'll get a list of songs that were popular that year, plus some noteworthy events that happened in the music industry. List some of them and blog about them!

Ok.... I was 18 in 1988.
Rather than copy the entire list, which is pretty long, I'm just going to copy the songs I really liked. There are 75 on the list, and I liked a lot of them, but here are my top favorites:

4. Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard (I love pretty much everything Def Leppard has ever done).

32. Chains Of Love - Erasure (I LOVE Erasure. Love them. They are awesome. This video was awesome, too... I remember a grand piano was suspended from the ceiling in chains. So cool!)

46. Beds Are Burning - Midnight Oil (Another group I loved! The lead vocalist has such an interesting voice... It's so OUT there...)

51. Wild Wild West - The Escape Club (Another one where I fondly remember watching the video. Good song, too.)

56. It's The End Of The World As We Know It - R.E.M. (I love REM!!)

75. Englishman In New York - Sting (Anything done by Sting HAS to be cool. It's a law.)

NOW for a few songs on the list that I DIDN'T like:

5. I'll Always Love You - Taylor Dayne (I can not stand Taylor Dayne.)

27. Can't Stay Away From You - Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine (I can not stand Gloria Estefan.)

52. So Emotional - Whitney Houston (I can not stand Whitney Houston.)

59. Tell It To My Heart - Taylor Dayne (Did I mention I can't stand Taylor Dayne?)

Note: One of the songs on the list was "Don't Worry, Be Happy", by Bobby McFerrin. Now, normally this airheaded cheeriness is NOT in line with my personality, but I have to admit that this song is a guilty pleasure for me. I usually enjoy it when I hear it.
(deep breath)
There, I admitted it.
I feel better now.
Although I think I need a shower.

1988 - geez, I had just divorced hubby #1 and met current hubby. Wow.

Um, yeah, great songs. I agree that Sting is cool. Actually, he's beyond cool. He's...um...FINE.

You don't like Taylor Dayne, Whitney Houston (from the 80's), and Gloria Estefan?
What kind of a gay man are you anyway?

Desert Songbird: Yes! Gotta love Sting!

Morgen: I think I see the flaw in your logic... try the equations again, only this time enter the following data: Janna is straight and female... Then feel free to submit your results for peer review.

God, much of that was SO NOT my taste! I liked Blondie and Talking Heads and the Ramones and the Sex Pistols.None of it was the Pop 40!

Taylor Dane -- Even now I gag a little when I think of that!

Metalmom: Hey, I think 1980 was the year Fab graduated!

Yes, it was! I've got one month on him. However the soundtrack for him went something like "I'm Coming Out", "Ladies' Night" and"Do That to Me One More Time"! LOL (I KEED, I KEED)

Hmm...we seem to not be in sync with the music of 1988....

I SHOULD probably do this one. You are right, 1980.

I am not saying how old I was in 1980. LOL.

1988--wow-- I just started with Legal Aid and was single and
loving it.

And I have incredibly varied taste in music--like all of Metalmoms picks as well-but it's your meme so...

I ADORE Def Leppard--one of my guilty pleasures---I crank it up every time.

Oh Oh Oh I LOVE that Erasure song---oh my mmmmmmmmmm some good memories there.

I was incredibly intrigued by Midnight Oil as the lead singer was trained as an attorney--love the video and the song.

Wild Wild West was one of my favorite party songs of the year--it's just so catchy.

R.E.M and Sting are two of my all time favorite artists--love these songs as well

And since I am the annoyingly positive chick I'll just say I positively hate Taylor Dayne as well ;-)

seriously, that chart for 1982 doesn't have the number one song of the year, "physical" by olivia newton-john, or some other top 50 songs that are actually really really good, like "leather and lace" by stevie nicks and don henley, and of course my personal favorite '65 love affair' by paul davis :-)

the clash did put out "rock the casbah" which made the chart. but come on '1999' came out that year, and so did 'violent femmes' ... 'blister in the sun' is still one of the best songs of the rock era.

i just can't bring myself to participate with an inferior list :-p
