Are you sure? I thought for sure I saw you and an ominous cloud hovering over the metaphysical section of the local branch, dictating and teaching to the little kittens.
I think maybe cats understand English but pretend not to. I have neighbors like that. For years I thought the pastor next door couldn't speak a word of English but then one day he burst into complete, fluent sentences in response to a question about his sign order (that his wife had handled while he stood mutely by until that moment).
Glad I never said anything silly about him in his presence. Actually, he's a very nice person and I don't understand why he never spoke to me before that.
Actually, cat's understand English very well, as do other animals that are around English speaking people a lot. In fact all animals, given enough time around humans, can understand their speach perfectly. The trouble comes in when people don't realize that they are the ones who don't understand the animals, in this case cats.
For example, if you irritate your cat, he/she will tell you by tearing up your toilet paper or something. It's up to you to figure out what you had done wrong! If your cat wants something from you, he/she will walk around your legs in circles telling you so. Again, it's up to you to figure out what your cat wants. The list goes on, and on. Cat's and dog's do commune with people, but by-and-large-and-for-the-most-part, people are too ignorant to realize it. That is not to say that people are stupid, it just means that they haven't learned the art of animal communication :)

I agree with Marilyn about #4. They understand, they are just ignoring us.
