Giant slugs... the breakfast of champions

Today I got an online St. Patrick's Day card from Mary.
Wasn't that sweet?
Thank you, Mary!
I have only one question.
Look.... here's the picture that came with the card:

Very pretty.
Now, look at that breakfast plate in the lower right corner.
I recognize bacon, fried eggs, sausage, hash browns, strawberries, and some little things that look like they could be baked beans. (???)

But my real question is concerning the freaky pointy gray things in back, right under the word "Tribune".
Here's a close-up:

What ARE those things?
They look like giant slugs.

Someone out there, please tell me what these things are.
Until I find out, I am never going to eat breakfast in Ireland.

Oh hell Janna now you've got me wondering too. And they are so ugly looking that I have to find out... I'll be back!

Okay Janna, they are mushrooms and are considered part of a full Irish or English breakfast. See a picture here
Well that didn't take me so long...bet you want to know what black pudding is... :)

And if you question it, think about the mushrooms sitting on their caps with their stems sticking up... Ha! (get your mind out of the gutter, Janna!)

Anonymous: Apparently you're right!

Mary: Wow! Mushrooms for breakfast. Freaky. I guess it's not TOO much different from having a mushroom-and-cheese omelette. Those are ok. :) And I see those really are baked beans! For breakfast! Do you have any idea how much gas that would give me the rest of the day? What an adventure! As for the black pudding... yeahhh, unfortunately I'm aware of what that is. (**shudder**).
(Anyone else who wants to know what blood pudding is can click here.) I would rather starve to death before I ate blood for breakfast. But that's just me. :)
Thanks, Mary, for doing the research!

How sweet of Mary to send you a St. Patty's day card already. It's kinda fun getting those e-cards, isn't it?

That breakfast is commonly referred to as "bangers and beans", bangers being breakfast sausages. Just thought you'd like to know :)

Kind of explains why there aren't a lot of Irish/English breakfast places around.

Here is your reason why the phrase "english cooking" is considered an oxymoron.

Janna said...

Skye: It's fun to say "Bangers and Beans"!!

DaOldMan: Or Scottish ones, with haggis.

MarvelGoose: I've wondered about that...

Now that I know those are mushrooms and not slugs, I'd happily chow down on that plate!

Travis: Me too!

i was gonna guess kippers

Janna said...

Morgen: I've never tried kippers... I bet they taste really fishy. Like ugly-nasty sardine-fishy. Ever had them?

where'd my comment go?

anyway... those little things look like anthills.

Janna said...

Whall: I wonder how many calories an anthill has. (Guess it depends on how many ants are in it, huh?!?!!)
