Potpourri of various food-related things

1. I found a neat recipe for BBQ ribs... and instead of sugar or honey, they sweeten it with Coca-Cola!! At first I thought "Ew", but then I decided it might actually be kind of good.
HERE's the recipe.

2. Lately I have had a thing for Faygo Redpop. I love Faygo Redpop. Someone help me, I can't put it down! I've got a bottle right here next to me! It turns my tongue red every time, but I love it soooo much! It's all sweet and strawberry-like, with that bright toxic neon radioactive red color... Mmmmm.
(Although I guess radioactive things are blue or green, aren't they? On The Simpsons the nuclear stuff is bright glowing green... Ok, I'll go with that... after all, how could The Simpsons possibly be wrong about anything?)

3. On a recent post over at Pointless Drivel, Mr. Fab says that asparagus makes his pee smell weird. (Yes, he really said that.) Apparently this is a chemical reaction that happens to SOME people, but not ALL people. I have become insanely curious now, wondering if I'm one of those people. I don't mind asparagus; I just don't eat it very often. (And I never paid attention to any resulting odors before). Yet now I find myself wanting to go out and buy some asparagus, just so I can know for sure if I'm one of the people whose pee smells weird afterward. I realize this makes me a sick disgusting person. And yet....

4. I have found a delicious Oriental hot sauce which I highly recommend. It's "Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce," by Huy Fong. I found it at Meijer, in the Ethnic foods section. It's got a bunch of Chinese words on the front, and a rooster. They have a website: www.huyfong.com. HERE'S the page that talks about the Sriracha sauce. The sauce is bright red, (all natural color!) and deliciously hot. I love it. Love it!! I put just a tiny drop on my tongue, to taste it, and my tongue came alive. Whoo, boy. And it's not JUST heat, it has a great flavor, too. Right now I have a pan of mini egg-rolls in the oven, and I'm going to eat them with the hot sauce as my evening snack.

UPDATE: I'm done with my plate of mini egg rolls. They were amazing. My tongue is burning, my nose is running, and my eyes are full of tears.
I LOVE THIS STUFF!!!

UPDATE #2: I found a Lean Cuisine in the freezer that had asparagus, so I ate that. You will all surely be delighted to hear that my pee doesn't smell any different from usual (not that I go around sniffing it on a regular basis).

I love me some Faygo Redpop! That was my drink of choice as a kid, that is, whenever my parents let me have a soda. I found a place here that sells it, but I've only indulged once.

I've seen that hot sauce in my regular Asian supermarket, but I use an Indonesian condiment called sambal badjak. Great, great stuff. I cook with it or with sambal oelek (fewer spices), depending on what I'm cooking. Being part Indonesian, I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to this stuff...

Desert Songbird: That's funny you should mention that; I was just perusing that Huy Fong website, and I see that they also carry the sambal oelek sauce! I'd love to try that sometime too.

Redpop? That has Michigan written all over it. They'd have to change the name to 'red soda' to sell it around here, and that just doesn't have as nice a ring to it ;)

Parlancheq: I agree; the name "redpop" sounds much tastier than "red soda". :)
Red Soda sounds too much like Red Rum, which is "Murder" spelled backwards. (I learned that from watching The Shining!)

I love Faygo Red Pop. We used to drink Faygo when we were kids. They had so many different flavors. Cheers!!

I like Faygo Rocky Moon Mist, or whatever their version of Mountain Dew is. I'm not a redpop fan, because I'm not a fan of "strawberry" flavors.

I'm glad you found a hot sauce that is "Janna approved!" ~ that company should pay you royalties, because I KNOW that you are quite the connoisseur of hot things, and to be Jannafied, it's gotta be HOT!

Oh, and all I have to say about Mr. Fab and the asparagus is "thank goodness I'm not the only one!"
I thought it was just ME that asparagus did that to!!!
Mmmmm... now I want some asparagus.

Note to self..Never try Janna's recommended sauces cause they might kill me! :-P

Any guys who have male or lady freinds that perform certain oral activities with them would probably appreciate if you did not eat asparagus previous to these intimate endeavors. As it does affect the taste of certain....things that are the end result of said escapades. That's my public service announcement for the day! :-P

Matt-man: I know, Faygo comes in a veritable rainbow of flavors!

Morgen: You're part of the asparagus crowd along with Fab? Alas. It appears I am not one of you. But maybe you and he can start a club or something.

Juby: Aw, go on, try it! You know you want to! .... and thank you for the public service announcement. :)

see, Janna - there ARE some advantages to celibacy!

We'll never taste asparagus-funked spunk!

:)

by the way, there's not enough asparagus in a Lean Cuisine to make my pee smell funny...
Usually only FRESH asparagus, in quantity (like when last Spring and I sautéed a half a pound of asparagus for my day-off lunch!) will do it to me -- and when you sit down to pee, you don't quite get the same aromatic effect as standing up to pee.
Aren't you just learning TONS of urinary trivia today????

I think when i eat a TON of asparagus I fall into that category too but it has to be a lot. I LOVE Sriracha and eat it on many things (it is actualy really good on pizza). I could use something a little hotter though. The flavor is great but sometimes I need a little more spice!

I totally forgot to tell you about Eriracha sauce! I love it.
A great mirinade for pork. Kraft Roasted Red Pepper Italian Salad Dressing and three squirts of Sriracha sauce. Marinate the pork or chicken for 1 hour and them broil. Deelish!

I do like spicy! Food and Men! And you brought memories of childhood joy back to me with the mention of Faygo pop! We can't buy it here in California, and I so long for it. My parents used to keep a whole extra refridgerator in the basement just for Faygo--all flavors! No wonder I was wired all through my school years.

And by the way...the asparagus and pee thing...totally true! And why does it always seem I choose to have asparagus before attending some public function where the restrooms are full of men waiting in line. You should see the looks and wrinkled noses it creates! Occassionally I'll get a look from someone like, "Oh, I totally understand. I just had asparagus too and I'm so glad you went first. They'll still blame it on you!"

Oh yeah, girl. A little coke (although I like to use a diet cola) used to marinate meat is a great tenderizer.
Asparagus - ya gotta eat it straight up for the smelly piss. I like asparagus steamed and doused with a little balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
That hot sause is great. There are a few Chinese restaurants that have it on hand. MOTTO: The hotter, the better!

Morgen: If I'm ever a contestant on Jeopardy, maybe this will be one of the categories...

Natalie: Sriracha on pizza?? Really?

Cincy Diva: The marinade DOES sound good.

Mr. Fab: A WHOLE CAN?????

Steven: I'm so glad women don't have to pee in front of other people. I don't think I could do it, even if my pee smelled like roses.

Nomas: That's my motto too!! The hotter the better!!! Yes!! :)

I LOVE Faygo! especially orange pop. but, it can never be as good as FuFu Berry Jones Soda (yes, I know I've probably commited some crime against Michigan, but... I Digress) :]

Janna said...

Peanut: I tried the FuFu berry soda once, but I can't remember what it tasted like... can't remember whether I liked it or not. (I'd never heard of a FuFu berry before. Sounds like the name of a poodle).
