Learning from the big shots

I never fail to be amazed by the high-traffic blogs out there that get TONS of comments. I've seen blogs that had 200 comments for a single post. Others regularly hit 100 with no problem. This boggles my mind.
I can think of two offhand, (though I know there are more), which fit in this category:
Pointless Drivel (Mr. Fabulous), and
My Brain Hates Me But I Hate It More (Steve Novak).
Humor me for a moment while I analyze what they have in common.
Both bloggers have a bizarre, unique, sometimes-disturbing sense of humor. They're outrageous in a FUN sort of way. Both want you to laugh, even if that means you have to gasp in shock a few times before that happens. Both are definitely for ADULT audiences only. Both don't really care if they "cross the line" once in awhile. I like it that way. Be yourself, not necessarily who "polite society" would like you to be. That's my motto. (Well, that and "Hey, let's get pizza".)
And not only are these two deluged with comments, but both Mr. Fab and Steve Novak take the time to respond to each and every single solitary comment they get.
I dunno how they do it; it must be a full time job.
As of right now, Steve's monday post has 212 comments. Although, about half of them are his own, since he chooses to respond to each comment with a separate comment of his own. Still, half of 212 is pretty darn impressive.
This post from Pointless Drivel (the infamous 'asparagus pee' post) got 105 comments. Mr. Fab responds to a few people at a time when he posts replies, instead of one-to-one like Steve Novak. So a greater percentage of that 105 is actually other people's comments.
All this has inspired me to be more diligent about keeping up with responding to comments. I ALWAYS read all my comments, always, every single one of them, but I've decided that I really need to be better about answering them.
So I retroactively went back and responded to every unanswered comment since March 7th. (Feel free to check!)
And I promise that I will now do my very best to respond to each and every comment you guys leave me!!
***Group hug!!!***
Now let's get pizza.

The main difference between Steve and me is that he is smarter and prettier, while I am more street-wise and have a much larger penis.

While I am distracted by mental images of Mr. Fab's "much larger penis"... I have joined the Janna Bandwagon: I just posted that I, too, will try to be more comment-on-commenter friendly at
It’s A Blog Eat Blog World

Thanks for the inspiration/reminder, Janna -- I used to be very good at this, but have lapsed with me finding gmail.

My thing is....I don't think I am so interesting that anyone would go BACK to a comment page to see if I said anythin so I usually don't comment on comments. I'll try to do better.

Can we get anchovies on it Janna!?

Steve Novak's blog blows me away. I finally started commenting, figuring I'd be lost in the sea, but NOPE - he responded just as we does to everyone else. Wow.

There are some blog posts that I return to over and over again because the ensuing "conversation" that occurs is often more amusing or informational than the original post (think Matt-Man or Bond's Big Leather Couch). I try to respond to comments, but often I just e-mail that person directly or make a new post. I guess I should stick with one way and run with it, see where it takes me.

Skippy! I just caught up with you on Mr. Fabulous's show! You're a star!! Remember me when you amass your millions.

Love your two mottos!

Group hugs and pizza~ it doesn't get better'n this!

I get tons of Silent Lurkers, but, God love 'em, they don't have to comment or ever talk to me~ they can come in and just lurk like ninjas, if they want to!

I love comments and replying to comments. I don't know why but I just feel like I should. If something i wrote got someone to want to say something, I better recognize.

I finks that you'd get even more visitors if your kitties had their own bloggie.
That's just my 'pinion.
Meow for now,

Mr. Fab: I'll need photo documentation, presented in triplicate, signed, notarized, and sent by Priority Mail before Friday.
Or you can make a polymer clay replica of your penis, like Steve did...

Morgen: The "Janna Bandwagon"... sounds like a really bad 70's band.

Cincy Diva: Of COURSE you're interesting!

Matt-man: No. :)

Desert Songbird: I agree, Matt-man's another one with a fun comments section. For some reason, though, Bond's blog makes my computer freeze up about 90% of the time. I don't understand why.

Steve: OMG! I can't believe you listened to me making a fool of myself on the radio!! We must never speak of this again. If you call me Skippy in public I may have to hurt you. :)

Christine: God bless the lurkers. :)

Natalie: I agree 100%.

Daphne: Sweetie, your English is deteriorating! What happened? Have you been spending too much time around Skeezix? :)

its actually really hard to get into the habit of answering the comments. since i started responding to comments i have noticed a lasrge increase in comments myself!

Janna said...

Blue: I can see how that would make sense. Once people know you answer all your comments, they're more likely to stop back to see what you replied. Thus, an increase in traffic, and even more comments as a result. That certainly seems to be what happened with Fab & Steve, anyway! :)
Thanks for stopping by!

I like to respond to comments. I figure if someone enjoyed what I posted enough to leave a word or too, even if it's just of the "I was here" variety, the least I can do is acknowledge it.

I've fallen down a little bit lately - not responding every day. But it seems this is the re-dedication day.

So I too take the pledge and promise to be more diligent.

Bravo Janna!

Travis: Bravo to you too! :) Come in and have a slice of pizza with us.

I have found some great blogs by reading the comments on blogs I like and clicking on the user. That is how I found you mainly because you correctly answered Natalie's random lyric the Boys to Men song, man that one haunted me. I always answer comments and return the favor by visiting their blog. It is only proper since they took the time to participate.
I look forward to getting to know both you and your blog more.

Best wishes

Danielle: I've found good blogs by clicking on comments too. In fact, I found some of my favorites that way!
