Are they foaming around the mouth, or is that just the cream filling?

You may have heard that Hostess (the lovely company who makes Twinkies) is going bankrupt or going out of business or something like that.

They even said so themselves on their site.

Like many other people, this set off all sorts of alarm bells deep in the core of my being.
And the alarm bells were saying "YOU MUST GO BUY TWINKIES NOW BEFORE THEY ARE ALL GONE.  HURRY, YOU FOOL!  HURRY!"

So today I drove around to buy a box of Twinkies.
I don't have them often, but when I want them, I WANT THEM.

Wal-Mart had none.
In fact, the crazed masses had completely bought every single Hostess item.
There was nothing left.  No Twinkies, no pies, no Suzy-Q's, no cupcakes, no HoHo's, nothing.

So I drove to a different store a couple miles away (Kroger).
Same thing.
People had bought ALL the Hostess products, and absolutely none were left.

Still undaunted (well, perhaps slightly daunted), I drove to yet another grocery store further down the road.
And...
The exact same thing happened.
Everyone had already gotten there before me, and they had bought every single one of the Hostess products.
Nothing was left.

Plenty of Little Debbie stuff and cheap store brand stuff, but that wasn't what I wanted.  I wanted to lovingly enjoy a real genuine Twinkie for old times' sake.

And it seemed that they were all gone.
The radio was running stories about this.  It said that people were offering Twinkies on e-bay for exorbitant sums of money.  One site called it the "Twinkiepocalypse". Stores were rapidly being emptied of Hostess products.  People were going crazy.
(And it seemed that I was indeed one of them).

Slightly discouraged, I stopped at a gas station and glanced at their snack-cake display.  Imagine my elation when I saw two little packets of Twinkies.
I picked them up with lightning speed as the Twinkie-mania glinted in my eyes.

It has been a few years since I've bought Twinkies, apparently.
I remember them being somewhere around 25 cents a package.
Certainly not more than 75 cents.

Imagine my shock when the gas station lady said they were $1.49 each.

(!!!)

But... yes.
I still bought them.

And I ate exactly ONE.
It was delicious.

I'm saving the rest to be slowly savored over the next 20 years or so.
It's ok.  They last forever.

OMG the last Twinkie and Twilight in the same week. It's the apocalypse.

nonamedufus: This must have been what the Mayans were referring to in that calendar thing.

Twinkie's were not really ever available up here, north of the border. I know there is one company that has produced them from time to time but they didn't taste exactly like the originals.
Probably haven't had one in over 20 years.

Shawn: Hey! I've been meaning to ask you how the heck I can comment on your blog. You changed the layout or something, and there seems to be no way for me to leave a comment on anything. Even comments I left on previous posts aren't showing up. What happened? :o

I went to the nearest Pilot Jay's. A gas station here in Texas. And, bought out the entire Zingers. They're a pink twinkie, with creme filling and coconut. Yeap, they were a $1.49 each.

Adrian: Back when I was a kid, Zingers were made by a company called Dolly Madison. They always had commercials during the Charlie Brown cartoon specials. Sigh. Those were the days.
