Thirteen things people probably shouldn't eat (but don't let me stop you)

Hey, maybe it's just me being narrow-minded and unable to deal with the wondrous complexities of the world around me.
You decide.

1. Ox Penis

2. Tacos De Sesos (tacos made with beef brains)

3. Casu Marzu (The cheese with maggots included on purpose!)

4. Nankotsu (chicken cartilage, deep fried)

5. Mopani Caterpillars

6. Balut eggs (Yes, the ones with a partially formed baby bird inside)

7. Live Goldfish

8. Basahi/Sakuraniku (cold raw horse meat)

9. Durian

10. Shirako (fish sperm)

11. Criadillas (bull/pig testicles) (Seriously, you've GOTTA click on that, just to see the picture...)

12. Witchetty Grubs

13. Shiokara (rotten squid brains with tentacle bits, fermented for a year)
.

Disclaimer: If any of these are a beloved part of your culinary heritage, or your very favorite snack to enjoy whilst blogging, rest assured I mean no offense. Yay for diversity. You can also rest assured I won't ask you to share. :)
Carry on.

I think my post today might actually qualify for this list!

I've downed a few earthworms and who knows what I've eaten in other countries( especially when soused ). I'd have a go at those Witchetty grubs, cooked, of course. Ooh, and chocolate covered ants...taste like Cocoa Crispies!

What? So I've had some weird stuff. You should see the "normal" stuff I eat...then again...

I was looking forward to trying witchety grubs when I moved down here - but surprisingly Australians don't really eat them. Lots of kangaroo, though. Tasty.

Why did I click on that link to the bull testicles? Why? I'm scarred.

But seriously, who eats that kind of stuff?

Da Old Man said...

I refuse to click on any of them.

When I was a kid, my father used to eat sheeps head.

But the goldfish were behaving very, very badly.

Jeff: The freaky thing is, your ham/egg/cheese patty thingies actually sounded kinda good to me...!

Subtorp: Invertebrates should never, ever end up in my digestive system, because that would be the day I would have to scream and die. The only exceptions I can think of are seafood like shrimp, crab, clams, scallops, lobster... Somehow being underwater makes it less gross. I can't explain why.
Luckily I don't worry too much about making sense.

AFreeMan: I think I tried kangaroo jerky a couple years ago. It was ok, but slightly gamey.

FreeTheUnicorns: Is that a freaky picture or what???? I just can't get over all the wiggly tube duct things... Ack! Gack! Eww!

DaOldMan: Sheep's Head? Tongue and eyeballs and all?

Nooter: Help yourself! Take mine!

Jamie: You'd think they'd learn, after awhile...

Testicles should be cooked first. They look more appetizing that way. The most satisfying thing about them though is the look on your date's face.

Marilyn: Now that would be a precious Kodak moment! :)

Janna, I've heard of some really strange things, down in Cajun country...google at your own risk!

I have been to Singapore and Malaysia during Durian season. That fruit is just nasty. Hotels even have signs that forbid people from bringing it in.

Yes. The eyeball is a delicacy

Subtorp: I've heard about how they slurp down those crawfish, head and all. Despite my love for garlicky spicy things, I couldn't eat those. I just couldn't. The "ick" factor would send me hurtling into defeat every time. And yet, I love shrimp, which are similar. Go figure.

VE: Is there any place you HAVEN'T been? The arctic circle? Mars? My back yard?

DaOldMan: I try to stay away from food that is capable of watching me eat it...

Janna...er...it's even ickier than that. And then there's the squirrels...but I'll spare you the details...really, you do not wanna know!

Would you be at all surprised to hear that I've eaten Durian and I thought it was pretty good?

Janna said...

Subtorp: Oh, you might as well go ahead and spill it. Do a blog post about whatever the godawful stuff is. Besides, now I HAVE to know. Tell me. Tell me!!! :P

Whall: I can almost see you dancing to that....

Gwen: Not surprised in the least. In fact, I'd be disappointed to hear you say anything different. :)

Janna, not postin' this one...but apparently squirrel brains( raw )are another delicacy; the fresher, the better. Then again, the Japanese make soup from bat dung!!! Yummy!
